PORTLAND, Ore. -- An improperly disposed cigarette caused a southwest Portland fire that killed a man earlier this week, fire officials said Friday. Investigators said the cigarette smoldered in a mattress until flames erupted and spread to the rest of the house.
A father of three from Goodwood, who admitted having close to 50 grammes of compressed marijuana and seeds hidden below a mattress at his home on February 16, was last week ordered to pay a fine of $5,000 forthwith or serve 24 months in prison with hard labour when he appeared before Magistrate Joan Gill in the Scarborough First Court.

Sidney, Ohio- A house fire that killed three children was caused accidentally by a boy playing with a lighter, authorities said Wednesday. The 9-year-old boy was playing in a bedroom inside a makeshift fort of a mattress and bedsheets, Fire Chief Stan Crosley said.
